Ways to help Micah and his family...
Fundraising is a way help cover some of the cost of expenses related to Micah’s treatment. Food and transportation costs quickly add up. Micah's dad, Jason, drives between 400 and 600 miles each week. Jason owns his own business and has had to decrease his hours since Micah got sick. Micah's mom, Rebecca, has also been unable to work which has led to an additional loss of income. It is unclear what will and will not be covered by Micah's health insurance once they leave the hospital. Micah will require extensive follow-up care and insurance limits coverage on such things as home health care and specialized testing for orphan diseases like HLH. In combination with loss of income and medical expenses Micah's family will have the added expense of retrofitting their home for Micah given his unique needs. Additional carpeting has to be removed and replaced with hypo-allergenic alternatives. Insurance does not cover this substantial financial burden that is necessary to ensure Micah has a healthy living environment.
Since HLH is a rare, orphan disorder, there are no federal funds set aside for research and treatment. All research on HLH is therefore funded entirely by private funds. Organizations such as the Histiocyte Society and the Histiocytosis Association need donations to fund this much-needed research. An easy way to help the cause is to become a donor. Specifically, enlist in the Bone-marrow Donor Registry through Be the Match at www.marrow.org. The process is simple and requires a swab from the inside of your cheek or a blood sample. You can also give whole blood or platelets to your local blood collection center. People with HLH require transfusions of blood and platelets since the disease and its treatments cause blood cell destruction.
